The Student Farming Enterprise aims to grow organic produce for sale to the community of the Univeristy of Massachusetts Amherst.
History
The UMass Student Farming Enterprise started in the fall of 2007 with two students growing kale and broccoli through an independent study. In spring 2008, it was established as a 2-semester Plant, Soil, and Insect Science class. It has been developed and taught by extension educators Ruth Hazzard and Amanda Brown and UMass Crop and Research and Education Center's farm manager Kyle Bostrom.
Our students have a variety of backgrounds and come from all departments on campus as well as from the other five colleges and have majors such as Art; Plant, Soil, and Insect Science; Stockbridge School of Agriculture; Natural Resource Conservation; and BDIC (Bachelor's Degree with Individual Concentration).
The Student Farming Enterprise has received funding from The Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture and the Northeast Farm Credit AgEnhancement Program.
